Q3 & Q4 2007: the greatest line-up ever?

Ubisoft has announced the release dates of their upcoming games. Mentioning that Assassin’s Creed will be releasing on November 9th, just 7 days shy of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction releasing on the 16th. With two major titles releasing so close you begin to wonder how will you ever have time to play these games, let alone afford them.
The monster they call Halo 3 comes out late September and will probably have gamers hooked for quite a while, but soon after Grand Theft Auto releases in October. Don’t forget other games like Bioshock, Too Human, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon and so many others will be dodging these release dates to practically fill up your calendar.

Don’t look at your wallet in shame because there must be some logical way to afford and enjoy all these games. Isn’t there? Maybe you can get 2 extra jobs, trade in some old games, start pulling money out of that saving account, sell your soul or have the willpower to not purchase them on release date. EB Games and Gamestop will hate me for this, but your best bet is to purchase one game, enjoy it, sell it back and hope there is a used game of the next one on your list. And repeat.

With all that money you saved you can purchase a Delorean so you have the time to play!

It’s not EB Games and Gamestop that will hate you… They make almost the same selling used games. It is the gaming industry that will suffer as low sales means low revenue for game developers and game publishers. Ultimately this will mean fewer games and lower quality. Lower revenue will mean fewer development projects and lower ambition in those, fewer gambles on new IP and new concepts.

    A. EB Games is GameStop

    B. The amount of money that the consumer public has to spend on individual games doesn’t actually matter that much. The number of copies that GameStop, Wal-Mart and Target order matter ‘on the books.’ So, the number of games does not affect revenue. Although, I do agree that how the public purchases these games will affect which games these stores order in the future, limiting the publishers investment in the quirk of some games.

    C. GameStop ‘should’ be making far more on their used games than their new (although, this doesn’t take into account that GameStop sells a lot of new games) games since the markup on new games is usually about 7% (5% at the low end, 12% at the high end) and markup on used games are 80%. Then again, GameStop seems to be moving away from “used” games, not carrying PS1 and older titles.

EB Games is Gamestop, as well as Funcoland i believe, but i mentioned both names because they are still separate stores.

And EB/Gamestop/Funcoland would be ticked off if consumers decided to purchase major titles consecutively instead of simultaneously. That would mean less reserves and more copies sitting in the store. That still wouldn’t matter because most people will still buy the games the second that its on the shelf. Plus that last part was supposed to be taken as a light hearted joke.

The best way to play and afford all these games is to do what me and RestlessSpectre is doing. Were going halves on a Gamefly 3-game account.
